Development Director Wanted

The Beloit Historical Society is seeking a part-time Development Director for the development and implementation of fundraising strategies. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and fundraising software preferred.

Development Director Job Description

The Development Director at the Beloit Historical Society (BHS) in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the BHS and in collaboration with the Program Director is responsible for the development and implementation of long and short term fundraising strategies to ensure that the BHS has sufficient funds to implement the goals outlined in its 2017 strategic plan and future plans to achieve its mission of "Sharing Beloit's history to enhance community pride."

Specific areas of responsibilities include:

Fundraising

  1. Designs, implements and manages all agency fundraising and membership activities including annual giving, endowment and capital campaigns, special projects and other agency related solicitations, including planned giving.
  2. Manages all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation and relations.
  3. Maintains contact with and develops grant proposals for foundations, corporations and government funding sources.
  4. Develops a planned giving program as the need becomes appropriate.
  5. Coordinate with Program Director to identify and secure grants and other funding to support programs.
  6. Assist in securing in-kind donations from businesses and corporations.

Board of Directors

  1. Works with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and the Program Director to develop strategies to initiate and meet aggressive fundraising goals.
  2. Develops fundraising guidance for the Board of Directors and other volunteers to ensure a cohesive message.
  3. Assumes responsibility for all Development reports to the Board of Directors and attends all board meetings.
  4. Helps identify potential new members of the Board of Directors, Committees, and other volunteers.
  5. Attends Board Meetings

Development Office Infrastructure

  1. Creates office systems and selects software to support development projects and operations.
  2. Supervises membership, donor and gift record keeping.
  3. Coordinates development research activities.
  4. Oversees the management of fundraising records.
  5. Manages acknowledgment of all gifts to donors.
  6. Develop and staff a Development Committee.

Donor and Member Relations

  1. Ensures that all donors and members are kept up to date on BHS activities and events.
  2. Organizes a yearly donor appreciation event in coordination with the Program Manager.
  3. Develops a donor cultivation program.
  4. Writes thank-you letters and acknowledgements for gifts and donations.

Public Relations, Marketing and Advertising

  1. Works with the Program Director to develop public relations and advertising plans that promote the BHS's fundraising goals.
  2. Works the Program Director in the design and production of all major publications, including The Confluence, annual report, website etc to promote the historical society's fundraising goals and activities.
  3. Develops and implements strategies with the Program Director to promote the BHS's mission to the community at large.

General Office Duties

  1. Other duties as assigned may include assisting with special events, answering phones, responding to inquiries, making arrangements for use of facilities, and opening/closing facility.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and work experience in fundraising.
  2. Experience in designing and managing development programs.
  3. Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with Board members, volunteers and donors.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  5. Ability to work as a leader and as part of a team.
  6. Experience with fundraising software.
  7. Moderate knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media preferred.

  1. The selected individual is expected to use their own vehicle for transportation.
  2. Must possess a valid driver's license.
